I've found a treasure in a children's series that recognizes the capacity in kids to understand deep truths. The first book, Beneath the Sky of an Angry God, takes us on a journey with a 16-year-old Delaware Indian who lives among the Cherokee in 1838. Forced to leave his home and watch many people die on the relentless march to Oklahoma, he is bitter at the "white man" and at God.

The authors could have written about injustice, but they chose instead to teach important lessons of forgiveness and trust. My children learned more than just history when they read this book; and yours will too.

The second book in this children's series continues to tackle tough issues. The main character is the 16-year-old daughter of a family from the first book. The authors promise similar links throughout the series.

In Above the Midas Touch, we meet Mary, who has turned her back on a rich missionary heritage to dig for gold. Her adventure, during the 1849 Gold Rush in California, is not just another hunt for buried treasure, but a powerful reminder that greed and ambition are no friends.
