What the Authors Say

Through a Child's Eyes is a collection of Old Testament Bible stories intended for reading aloud to a young audience. Without announcing book, chapter or verse, each story is told through the eyes of a young person or one of God's creatures and is woven through with a thread of surprise. Clues are placed in the reader's path, but only at the story's end is the identity of the Bible character or situation fully revealed. Bible references from which the story were taken and a brief inspirational thought conclude each selection.

Why this approach? To rekindle the mystery and wonder of life and faith in Old Testament times! God gave us these stories for a reason, but sometimes we know them so well that we no longer feel any delight or awe when we hear them. We are separated from the people and culture of the Bible by thousands of years, and for most of us, by an ocean and a continent. In addition, we read the Greatest Stories Ever Told from the comfort and safety of our homes, Sunday schools, and churches, whereas life in biblical times was rarely comfortable or safe. For us, the outcomes are decided by casual reading during devotional time. But for those who lived the stories, the outcomes were unforeseen.

Entertaining and educational for both parents and children, Through a Child's Eyes draws upon stories both familiar and not so familiar. Some are lighthearted, many adventurous, a few tragic-but all inspirational. Stories of kings and prophets, warriors and servants, parents and children, saints and sinners. Stories of incredible wonder and might, honor and victory, love and courage. Stories to encourage us, teach us, challenge us, and often, warn us not to repeat the mistakes of those who went before. Stories given by God to touch our hearts, to stir our minds, and to move our emotions. Stories that leave us in a better place than before we started reading.

What the Bible Says

And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matt 18:3 (NIV)

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow. Eccl. 1:9-11 NIV

Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did... These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 1 Cor. 10:6,11-12 NIV

[A]nd how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:15-17 NIV
